1 out of 5 stars 64 bit Vegas Pro 8.1 Very, very buggy   December 21, 2008

Vegas Pro 8.1 64 bit version is chock full of bugs and crashes every few minutes. It has good days where it can last an hour. Other times it dies in minutes. br / br /I am running Vista 64 bit with a 1.86 ghz quad core with 12 gb memory - so should be enough to run without issues. br / br /Avoid like the plague until Sony get round to fixing the issues ( the 64 bit version is still very new at the moment ). br / br /The 32 bit version seems a lot more stable even on a 64 bit OS.

5 out of 5 stars A Review from a reformed Premiere Pro user.   April 21, 2008

I have always used Adobe Premiere since version 6.0 several years ago, assuming that it was the best Windows-based video editing package. However, my problems first began when trying the edit the footage from my new HDV video camera - Premiere Pro (despite being advertised as being HD-friendly) could not handle the files without conversion, which is a long process. I decided to give Sony's own Vegas software a try due to compatability with my video camera's files. br / br /So, how is it to use compared to Premiere? The workspace layout is slightly different to the Adobe software, with more control available through the timeline itself (transitions, audio transitions, adding text, video effects etc) rather than being relegated to the 'Effects Control' window like in Premiere. This is much easier. Another good feature is the 'Project Media' tab which is separate from the 'Explorer' tab, which makes finding your media much simpler and quicker. br / br /One of the best features I have found so far is the speed and stability of the software, which is incomparable to Premiere. Trying to edit a simple picture clipshow with some basic pan scan effects was painfully slow and choppy in Premiere using my AMD Turion x64, 512GB Video, 2GB RAM laptop (which it shouldn't be!) but was smooth and stable in Vegas. Another issue was editing video directly off my 500GB external HDD (Premiere does not store the files itself when playing through the edited clip, but rather loads each one individually, which is a definite Hard Disk killer) whereas Vegas loads the files into the temp memory and plays them from there. br / br /Proper support for an external monitor is also included, which works much better than the Adobe alternative. br / br /Overall, Vegas is a brilliant package. It has all the features of Premiere but is infinitely more stable and faster too! I'll never use Adobe again, well done Sony.

Just upgraded to Vegas 8. br / br /As usual - very stable. It remains the fastest way of editing video on a PC (not tried Final Cut Pro on the Mac). Works fine on HD. br / br /And they've now caught up other editors in this realese on titling - which was about Vegas's only weak spot. br / br /I can now officially use this software on Vista - though v7 seemed to work fine anyway. br /
