1 out of 5 stars Shame Shame Shame   December 30, 2008
Buckster (Sydney)
Shame! Shame! Shame! Virgin books. br / br /You have taken an iconic publication and turned it into a mess. br / br /The official UK chart is Top 75 ..... not Top 40! Bring back the full list of Top 75 singles and weeks in the top 75 in the next edition or I fear it will be your last. br / br /I have bought every edition of Guiness British Hit Singles for 15 years, and will give Virgin one more chance (in the hope they read and listen to these comments posted by all the disappointed fans). br / br /Here in Australia we have a Top 100 and that is recognised in the Kent Music Chart Books which are published far too unfrequently. But at least when they are published the full Top 100 is reflected. br / br /If Virgin are looking for a great way to modernise this title and jazz it up for the next edition, they should look at the above-fantastic books produced by Joel Whitburn and his Billboard Top 100 Chart books in America. They don't discount songs outside the Top 40, no matter how insignificant the single was. Every Top 100 hit is listed and contains full chart details.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment abounds   December 28, 2008

This'll be short, as it concurs with all the other 1 or 2 star reviews - this is a real disappointment. Those who are saying that the poor reviews are by "snobs" or that somehow we are stuck in our ways vis-a-vis the excellent Guinness books - not at all! I'm all for change and improvement. What's happened here is simply that stuff has been taken out, the context and the attention to detail has been lost and it has been massively dumbed down. br / br /Just little things like - why no blobs and stars for top 10/Number 1? Why no total weeks on chart? Why no basic reference as to what counts as a hit, a week on chart, a re-entry etc? This could've been the most exciting book ever, coming as it does as the first British Hit Singles since downloads were included in the chart on an unfettered basis. Instead, it thoroughly underwhelms. br / br /I've given it two stars rather than one simply because I'm half-grateful that someone picked up the baton that Guinness gave up on. However I think if the next edition is going to be this poor, let's just put the baton down entirely. br /Come back Guinness, please!

1 out of 5 stars the Virgin curse strikes again   December 27, 2008
Vauxhall1964 (London, UK)
When Virgin get their hands on something it's time to worry. Their radio station is in decline, their record shops went bankrupt, the Virgin record label is defunct and now they ruin the UK's chart bible. I never thought Guinness would give up on the concept but boy do we miss them, having seen the replacement. This Virgin book is desperately bad, put together by people who just don't care. Hideous cover, awful layout, lacking all the fun trivia we were treated to by Guinness and, incredibly, not even the complete chart listings. I mean, just what is the point? This is a cheap, nasty and, mark my words, final chapter in a once essential series of reference books. Tragic. br /PS I'm suspicious of the 5 star reviews for this mess posted by people who have never reviewed anything before or since. The work of an embarrassed editor perhaps?

1 out of 5 stars Poor compared to the other editions.   December 20, 2008

I was really looking forward to this new edition, following the big build up to it over the last couple of years. I expected a jam packed singles and albums editions with trivia, updated top 75 etc. However, none of this was present in this edition. Just top 40 singles and nothing more. I, for one, will not be buying this edition and the authors will have to do better in the next time. Not entertaining at all.
